CHARACTER INFO

Character: Kratos Aurion
Canon: Tales of Symphonia | Before the reveal at Altessa's
Age: 4000+ (looks 28)

Background Information: Here!

Personality: Kratos is someone who comes off as one of the most intimidating people you'd ever meet. Between his physical appearance and his generally cool-headed demeanor, that isn’t too crazy of an assumption to make but it fails to take into account a lot of who Kratos is behind that initial impression.

Upon first glance, Kratos seems like a calm and cool, if mysterious, swordsman. No matter the situation, he tries to remain level-headed and, at times, irritatingly indifferent. Whether this be when escorting the Chosen at the beginning of the game or when bumping into Lloyd’s team throughout the game, he rarely loses his cool. Even during his own betrayal, all one can see is traitorous indifference. At the Tower of Salvation when Sheena accuses Kratos of deceiving them, he calmly explains how he hadn't deceived them at all due to everything happening as they wished. Subsequent run-ins with Kratos bring out that mysterious aspect to him.

Alternatively, they show how annoyingly cryptic he can be. Lloyd’s team has little to no idea what he’s up to when bumping into the man throughout Tethe’alla and, naturally, Kratos never explains and prefers to masterfully sidestep the conversation instead. Honestly, he comes off as an ass more often than not, like when he bluntly tells Colette to take off the necklace that Lloyd made. He doesn’t explain why he says that nor does he explain anything he does. Another aspect to Kratos that adds to his intimating factor is his intellect. He is one of the smartest members of the party, as evidenced by his high score on a test the party can take in the game. Finally, what tops off this initial impression is Kratos’ confidence in his own strength. This confidence isn't unfounded, either. Not only is he an experienced fighter but one who has been alive for millennia. He knows how strong he is; he also can tell when someone else is not. He bluntly tells Lloyd to get out of the way during their first boss fight because he knows a kid would only be a hindrance.

Digging a little underneath the surface reveals that Kratos is hardly as impressive of a person as he comes off as. One of the least charming personality traits would be his stubbornness. He stubbornly went and gathered the eternal ring items by himself rather than ask for help or be up front about his own activities. Let his own son and friends think he's evil, that's fine with him. He can handle this task b Once his mind is set on something, it will be done that way. Lloyd has to get that from someone.

For all his intellect, Kratos can be incredibly stupid at times. What sort of genius goes off to betray and fight his own son without any plan? This idiot. This stupidity extends into recklessness. When Mithos is poised to attack Lloyd at Altessa's, Kratos jumps in to take that hit without any hesitation. When that lack of thought comes into play, he's honestly no different from his own son. A final, somewhat unexpected trait is that he can be a bit hotheaded sometimes. This anger can come out in sillier situations or in more serious ones. Lloyd yelling at him and Genis about them being jerks about his personality gets shouting out of him. Kvar, however, brings out pure rage. Even his calm exterior fails to the point he scares the party after the first encounter with the Grand Cardinal. The rage fully rears its head in the fight against Kvar and doesn't even get masked as Kratos delivers the final blow.

This rage toward Kvar, however, was fueled by anguish. Sadness and guilt plague Kratos for numerous reasons. He let Mithos go insane, he failed to save Anna, he betrayed Lloyd, etc. In his own eyes, Kratos is a pathetic piece of trash underserving of anything. If it isn't obvious, the man harbors a deep self-hatred for himself but rarely allows anyone to catch glimpse of this. This self-hatred means he has no issue sacrificing himself for the greater good. When at Origin's Seal, Kratos doesn't hesitate in willingly giving up his life (which is luckily saved thanks to Yuan). If something happens to him but this sacrifice can help in any way then it is a worthy sacrifice.

At the very core and beyond all this anguish, however, lies a sweet and kind teacher-figure or even a dad who tries his best. A lot of his actions in the game are fueled by a desire to help. By gathering the eternal ring ingredients, he’s helping Lloyd out. It's better to do this by himself because Mithos is less likely to catch wind of anything suspicious that way. This desire to help comes out during less serious situations, as well. When Genis shows interest in learning the Angelic Language, Kratos chimes in about being more than happy to help him learn. What makes him a good teacher is also the patience and understanding he is capable of showing toward others. Lloyd's complaining and attitude didn't deter Kratos from continuing to train with him, for example.

Cool and mysterious mercenary but also a sweet and dumb dad: that's Kratos in a nutshell.

Abilities & Inventory: So lot of Kratos' abilities are tied to his Cruxis Crystal and that will NOT be coming with him. Here's the full list of his canon abilities and I'll add in what'll be left at the end

Abilities: Considering that Kratos is a 4000 year old angel, the guy has a wide variety of abilities. The first and most obvious would be his swordsmanship abilities. He knows how to use a sword and damn well at that. Next up would be his knowledge. The guy knows A LOT. He knows machines, he knows history, hell, he IS history. He also doesn't age. Thanks to a special ability developed in the war, his internal metabolism was stopped and he's stuck looking 28.

Artes are special sort of attacks. Kratos has mainly sword artes but also magic artes. Two of these are Angelic ones gained from his Exsphere; the rest are a result of him ingesting Aionis, which enabled him to use magic that no one without elven blood should be capable of doing. A list of artes can be found here.

Through the use of his Hi-Exsphere/Cruxis Crystal, Kratos gains some additional abilities. The first is no need for food, water or sleep (nerfing these in game to make him need sleep and I'm happy to nerf any other angelic abilities as needed). He also gains an increase in endurance, hearing and sight. The degree of this increase is never fully specified. For the hearing and sight, the distance is likely several miles while the endurance is to the level of being able to walk around a desert for a while without feeling overly worn out. Another ability gained is superhuman strength. Once again, it's never really made clear how strong he is but Colette succeeds in lifting Regal pretty easily so chances are it’s a decent amount of weight. The exsphere also gives him mana backwings, his being a translucent blue. Finally, the exsphere allows him to use Angelic Artes.

Abilities in Esco: Through the tattoo, Kratos will get back his light artes (which includes healing) and his fire artes. Aside from that, he will only retain his swordsmanship abilities and will not have any of his super-human abilities. I don't have any immediate plans to get him back his Cruxis Crystal and will happily chat with mods whenever I do about if that can be used and to what degree!

Inventory: Locket.

ARMADA SELECTION

Paladin.

Kratos had been a knight way back when and then took a role of mentor for both Lloyd and Mithos so being with the Paladin armada seems to fit him well. I'm looking to have him forge more bonds than he could back home and have him grow overall from thinking that he's a horrible person to possibly seeing he's not as bad as he thinks.
